1 — THE INVERSION

Let’s talk about kings.

Not metaphorically. Not as a rhetorical device. As a matter of political fact.

This week, King Charles III and Queen Camilla completed a four-day state visit to the United States — the first by a British monarch in two years.¹ He addressed Congress. He had tea at the White House. He shook the hand of the man whose administration is currently arguing in federal court that the law doesn’t fully apply to him.

King Charles III — born into his throne, never subjected himself to a single election, never asked for your vote, never needed it — is currently more constitutionally constrained than the President of the United States.

He cannot pass a law. He cannot override Parliament. He cannot fire a judge because a ruling inconvenienced him. He cannot stand before the nation and declare that his office grants him the right to do whatever he wants.

The man you were raised to see as the symbol of everything America was built to escape? He submits to the law.

And the man elected to protect you from exactly that kind of power? He’s arguing in federal court that the law doesn’t fully apply to him.

I want you to sit with that inversion before you decide what it means. Because the temptation — on both sides of the current divide — is to reach immediately for a comfortable explanation. The Trump supporter will call this liberal hysteria. The resister will call it proof that the system is broken and must be restored.

Both are wrong. And I’ll tell you why

2 — THE TITLE TRAP

We have been trained, from childhood, to respond to words as if they were facts.

King. Something in you tightens. You think: tyranny. Inherited power. The divine right to rule without consent. The thing America was born to escape.

President. Something relaxes. You think: chosen. Accountable. Temporary. The people’s servant, bound by oath and law.

But what if the title is just a word? What if the architecture of power has quietly outgrown the language we use to describe it?

Because here is what Donald Trump and his legal team have argued — not implied, not suggested, not floated as a talking point — argued in federal court: that Article II of the Constitution grants the President nearly unlimited authority over the executive branch. That a sitting president cannot be meaningfully investigated, cannot be effectively checked, cannot be held to the same laws that govern every other citizen of the republic he was elected to serve.

Reuters reported that in one stretch of legal filings alone, the administration argued that federal judges were improperly interfering with presidential authority in 97% of cases studied.² Legal scholars have described the administration’s posture plainly: it is “attacking the ability of federal judges to question or review executive actions.”³

They have a name for this doctrine. They call it the Unitary Executive Theory.

You can call it what it actually is.

The Divine Right of Kings.

Same idea. New wardrobe. The monarchy didn’t follow us across the Atlantic in the form of a crown and a throne. It followed us in the form of a legal argument — dressed in constitutional language, argued by lawyers in expensive suits, normalized through repetition until it began to sound like scholarship rather than the ancient claim it actually is: that the right man, in the right office, is above the law.

The irony is not subtle. The man elected to protect you from the tyranny of kings is making the king’s argument. And the king — the actual, literal, hereditary king — is submitting to Parliament.

We were taught to fear the wrong costume

3 — THE ARCHITECTURE

Here is where it gets uncomfortable.

Not for the Trump supporter — they stopped reading two sections ago. This is where it gets uncomfortable for the resister. For the marcher. For the person who showed up with the banner that reads No Kings and meant every word of it.

Leah Greenberg, co-founder of Indivisible, spoke for millions when she said: “There is nothing more American than saying, ‘We don’t have kings’ and exercising our right to peacefully protest.”⁴ Over 2,600 demonstrations formed across all 50 states. The movement has returned in wave after wave — a third edition of No Kings rallies emerged in 2026 alone.

I mean every word of it too. And I need you to stay with me.

The Founders were not naive men.

They were wealthy, propertied men who had just finished a revolution and were now tasked with building something that would protect their interests while appearing to serve everyone’s. They were lawyers and landowners and slaveholders and visionaries — often the same man wearing all four of those titles at once. They understood power because they had it, had fought for it, and had absolutely no intention of surrendering it to the mob they had just invited to help them win a war.

They feared two things equally — a king and a mob.

So they built something that could check both.

Not a democracy. Not in the way the word is used today, not in the way it appears on protest signs and bumper stickers and Fourth of July speeches. What they built was a managed republic — a system carefully engineered to distribute just enough power downward to maintain legitimacy while concentrating the real levers of governance in the hands of a specific class of people.

Elite by architecture. Democratic by branding.

Madison was transparent about the design in Federalist No. 10. A large republic, he argued, was preferable to a pure democracy precisely because it filtered the passions of the majority through elected representatives — men of property and standing who could be trusted to deliberate rather than react. The republic was built to slow popular will, not serve it.⁵

Hamilton went further. In Federalist No. 70 he argued that “energy in the executive is a leading character in the definition of good government.”⁶ A strong, decisive, singular executive — this was not a fear of the Founders. It was an aspiration. The Unitary Executive Theory did not appear from nowhere. It grew from a seed Hamilton planted deliberately.

Tad Stoermer, writing on the structural logic of the American founding, puts it plainly: the genius of the system was not its democratic spirit — it was its ability to make elite management feel like popular sovereignty.⁷ The guardrails people are mourning right now — the independent judiciary, the separation of powers, the sacred balance of the three branches — were never designed to protect everyone equally. They were designed to protect the system. And the system was designed to protect property, order, and the interests of those who already had both.

This is not cynicism. This is architecture.

And what we are watching right now — a president who claims the law bends to his will, who fires anyone who resists, who treats the institutions of government as personal instruments — is not a betrayal of that architecture.

It is one of its logical conclusions.

The Founders feared a demagogue. They built mechanisms to slow one down. But they also built a system that, under the right conditions, with the right pressure applied in the right places, could produce exactly what we are watching. Madison wrote about it. Hamilton worried about it. They hoped the mechanisms would hold.

The mechanisms are bending.

And the people marching in the streets to restore them are marching, in part, to restore a system that was always more myth than miracle — and calling it a golden age.

4 — THE SILENCING

Michel-Rolph Trouillot wrote that power doesn’t just shape the present — it shapes the past. It decides which stories get told, which voices get archived, which silences become so complete that they stop feeling like silences at all and start feeling like simply the way things were.

He called it the silencing of the past.⁸

We have been living inside one.

The story goes like this: America was founded on an idea. The idea was imperfect but salvageable. The founders were flawed but visionary. The system they built was designed to correct itself over time, to bend toward justice, to absorb the shocks of history and emerge more perfect than before. And so whenever America fails — whenever the system produces something monstrous — the failure is framed as a deviation. An aberration. Something foreign to the founding spirit that must be resisted and reversed.

It is a beautiful story.

It is also a story that requires you to forget a great deal.

Ask the people who were written into the Constitution as three-fifths of a human being how self-correcting the system felt. Ask the people whose land was taken, whose nations were dissolved, whose existence was treated as an obstacle to manifest destiny. Ask every woman who lived and died in this country before 1920 whether the sacred democratic spirit extended to them. Ask the people who were lynched in the decades after emancipation while the system corrected itself slowly, carefully, at a pace that the powerful found comfortable.

The system did not fail these people.

The system worked exactly as designed for a very long time — and the expansions of rights and dignity that came later came not because the system self-corrected, but because people fought, marched, bled, and died to force it to move. The system resisted. The people insisted. That is a different story than the one we tell ourselves.

Trouillot’s insight is devastating in its simplicity: the version of history that feels natural, that feels like common sense, that feels like simply the way things were — that version has been curated. Constructed. The silences are not accidental. They are the product of power deciding what gets remembered and what gets forgotten.

The golden age that the No Kings movement is appealing to — that age of democratic norms and institutional integrity and sacred checks and balances — existed. For some people. Under certain conditions. With significant and violent exceptions that the story prefers not to dwell on.

And the resistance that holds that golden age as its north star is, in part, fighting to restore a story rather than build a reality.

That is not a reason to stop fighting.

It is a reason to fight differently. To fight honestly. To fight with your eyes open to what was, rather than closed around what you wish had been.

5 — THE ONLY HONEST HOPE

So here is the full picture. Both sides of it.

Donald Trump behaves like an unchecked monarch. That is true. That is not hyperbole. That is what the historical record looks like when you hold it up to the light without flinching. The claim that presidential power is effectively unlimited, the systematic dismantling of institutional independence, the treatment of law as obstacle rather than boundary — these are not the behaviors of a democratic leader. They are the behaviors of a man who has decided that his will is the law. And a system that cannot stop him is failing at the most basic level of its stated purpose.

The resistance is right to resist. I want to say that clearly and without qualification.

And.

The system that was supposed to prevent this was always more fragile than the story admitted. The guardrails were always negotiable. The norms were always dependent on the good faith of people in power choosing to honor them. And the golden age being mourned — the era of democratic decency and institutional integrity that the No Kings movement is fighting to restore — was golden for some and not others, and even for those it served it was never as secure as the myth insisted.

The American founding did not produce a democracy. It produced a managed republic that was elite by architecture and democratic by branding — and one of its logical conclusions, under sufficient pressure from a sufficiently ruthless actor, was always going to look something like this. Hamilton’s energetic executive, unmoored from the norms that were supposed to contain him, is not a betrayal of the founding vision. In some ways, he is its fullest expression.

The No Kings banner is right about the present.

It is wrong about the past.

And resistance built on a myth will always have a ceiling — because the moment you win, you will be tempted to restore something that was never what you thought it was. You will call it a victory. You will go home. And the architecture will remain exactly as it was, waiting for the next man who decides that his will is the law.

The harder work — the work Baldwin knew, the work Trouillot documented, the work that doesn’t fit on a banner and won’t trend on a Friday afternoon — is to stop asking how we get back to the America that was, and start asking how we build the America that never existed.

Not the America of the founding myth. Not the America of selective memory and silenced history. But an America that actually does what it has always claimed to do — that extends its stated values to every body within its borders, that builds institutions accountable to everyone rather than protective of the few, that tells the truth about what it has been so that it can imagine something more honest about what it might become.

That project is harder than resistance. It is longer than a protest cycle. It does not fit on a banner.

It is also the only project worth doing.

That’s not pessimism.

That is the only honest form of hope left.

Barron Trump is an American citizen. He is an American citizen because the constitutional principle now under attack protected his birth.

He is an American citizen because he was born in New York City in 2006. That fact alone places him within the protection of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, which declares:

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States…”

For more than a century, this clause has been understood with remarkable clarity. The Supreme Court confirmed its scope in United States v. Wong Kim Ark, holding that birth on American soil establishes citizenship, regardless of the nationality of one’s parents, with narrow exceptions not relevant here.

Barron Trump’s citizenship is not controversial. It is not ambiguous. It is not theoretical.

It is settled law.

Yet now the machinery of power argues that this clause — written in the aftermath of slavery — should be read more narrowly than generations of Americans have understood it.

We are told the amendment was only meant to address one historical injustice, not to establish a durable principle.

But the authors of the amendment themselves anticipated this argument.

And they rejected it.

The historical record speaks plainly

In 1866 — after a constitutional order that tolerated slavery collapsed under the weight of its own contradictions — Congress debated the Civil Rights Act that would become the foundation of the Fourteenth Amendment. Senator Jacob Howard explained the citizenship clause in language that leaves little room for ambiguity:

“This amendment… declares that every person born within the limits of the United States… shall be regarded as a citizen of the United States.”

Howard then clarified the intended breadth of the principle:

“This will include every other class of persons.”

Not some.

Not a few.

Every other class.

Senator John Conness of California made the point even more explicitly, addressing concerns about children born to immigrants:

“The proposition before us… relates simply… to the children begotten of Chinese parents in California, and it is proposed to declare that they shall be citizens.”

The answer was yes.

Yes, even then.

Yes, even there.

The authors of the amendment understood perfectly well that the rule they were establishing would apply beyond the specific evil of slavery. They were crafting a principle that would outlive the moment of its birth.

A nation that had once defined human beings as property would now define citizenship by presence, not pedigree.

Birth, not bloodline.

Place, not parentage.

The quiet panic of belonging

Birthright citizenship has never merely been a technical legal rule. It is a statement about who is allowed to belong without apology. It declared that the future would not be owned by those who claimed inheritance as entitlement.

When the United States adopted this principle, it did something radical:
It declared that the future would not be owned by those who arrived first. It is a refusal to create permanent hereditary classes of insider and outsider.

And that declaration has never sat comfortably with those who imagine the nation as a private inheritance.

The ladder pulled up behind you

Melania Trump did not arrive in the United States as a citizen. She arrived through the same immigration system now portrayed as dangerously permissive.

Her early years in the country have been publicly scrutinized, including reporting that she was paid for modeling work before full work authorization was secured.

The point is not that her path was unusual. The point is that it was human.

Immigration has always been a terrain of paperwork, ambiguity, timing, sponsorship, interpretation — a system navigated imperfectly by millions of people who nevertheless went on to build lives, families, and contributions within this country.

That system allowed Melania Trump to live here.
That system allowed her family to take root here.
That system ensured that her son would be born an American citizen.

Now the same pathways are described as threats when walked by others.

The same ambiguity that once reflected the complexity of real human lives is now recast as evidence of national collapse.

The same legal principles that secured stability for one family are portrayed as intolerable instability when extended to another.

The system was navigable when it benefited them. It becomes intolerable when it benefits others. The principle is affirmed when it protects one’s own child. It is questioned when it protects someone else’s.

Birthright for me, not for thee.

The spectacle is the strategy

If the birthright citizenship argument existed in isolation, it might be dismissed as merely another strained legal theory. But it does not exist in isolation.

It arrives as part of a familiar rhythm:

A new outrage.
A new emergency.
A new rhetorical fire demanding immediate attention.
Always urgent.
Always replacing the last urgent existential crisis before its questions can be answered.

While the nation argues over whether the Fourteenth Amendment means what it has meant for more than a century, unresolved questions remain regarding the records connected to Jeffrey Epstein and the powerful networks that surrounded him. In an environment saturated with crisis, continuity becomes impossible, and without continuity there can be no accountability.

Documents appear.
Documents disappear.
Pages are released.
Pages are redacted.

The promise of transparency flickers, then recedes again into procedural language, sealed filings, partial disclosures, and indefinite timelines. And just as attention begins to settle long enough to demand clarity, something else arrives to seize the national gaze.

Another spectacle.
Another emergency.
Another linguistic battlefield in which words are made to mean their opposite.

The public is pulled forward, again and again, from one manufactured crisis to the next, until the original question dissolves into the background noise of perpetual controversy.

The spectacle is not a side effect. The spectacle is the environment. In such an environment, accountability becomes difficult to sustain. Memory becomes difficult to maintain, and focus becomes difficult to hold.

The result is a politics of permanent deferral, in which yesterday’s unanswered questions quietly expire under the pressure of today’s louder argument. The birthright citizenship fight does not merely test the meaning of constitutional language. It tests the durability of public attention.

Because power does not always need to refute a question. Sometimes it only needs to outpace it. To surround it. To exhaust the civic imagination until the question no longer feels urgent enough to follow.

In the constant churn of crisis, the most dangerous thing becomes possible: We forget what we were looking for. And what we forget, we rarely recover. Narrative flooding alone does not secure power. The narrative must also reshape the meaning of the words through which belonging is defined.

Language as a tool of exclusion

The phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” is now being forced to carry a burden it was never designed to bear. Language that once functioned as a corrective is now being recruited as a gatekeeping device.

Words written in the aftermath of catastrophe are being reinterpreted in order to recreate smaller versions of the same catastrophe.

The Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution did not emerge from a moment of national virtue. It emerged from a moment of national failure.

It was written because the original constitutional order — drafted by propertied white men willing to compromise with slavery — proved morally insufficient to sustain a democracy that claimed to value human equality.

The amendment did not complete the Constitution.

It exposed its limits.

John Bingham, one of the principal architects of the amendment, framed its purpose not as an abstract ideal but as a necessary constraint on abuses of power:

“No state shall deny to any person… the equal protection of the laws.”

The authors of the Fourteenth Amendment were not imagining a perfect nation. They were responding to the consequences of an imperfect one. They had seen what happens when citizenship is treated as an inherited privilege rather than a shared status. They had seen what happens when legal categories are manipulated to exclude disfavored groups from belonging. They had seen a system in which human beings could live inside a nation while being denied recognition as members of it.

The citizenship clause was written to prevent the re-creation of such permanent internal castes. Senator Jacob Howard described the amendment’s scope in deliberately expansive terms:

“Every person born within the limits of the United States… shall be regarded as a citizen.”

Not because the framers suddenly achieved moral clarity. But because centuries of hierarchy had made the alternative too dangerous to preserve.

The Fourteenth Amendment represents not the purity of the founding vision, but resistance to it. It is evidence that the constitutional system requires pressure in order to move toward justice. Appeals to the amendment are therefore not appeals to national innocence. They are appeals to the unfinished work of those who forced the nation to widen its definition of who counts.

To narrow that definition now is not to restore original intent. It is to repeat original exclusion.

The Constitution is not sacred. But the struggles that expanded it should not be casually reversed. Because every contraction of belonging has consequences that extend far beyond the immediate targets of exclusion. Once the circle begins to shrink, history shows it rarely stops at its first boundary. And those who imagine themselves safely inside the circle often discover, too late, how quickly lines can be redrawn.

The test of consistency

Barron Trump is an American citizen because the Fourteenth Amendment has long been understood to guarantee citizenship to those born on American soil. That interpretation did not become legitimate only after it benefited powerful families. And it does not become illegitimate simply because its consequences extend beyond them. If the principle is sound, it must be sound for everyone.

If it is unsound, its unsoundness must apply universally.

Anything else is not constitutional interpretation.

It is constitutional convenience disguised as constitutional interpretation.

The question beneath the argument

Who is allowed to belong without permission?

Who must prove themselves worthy of being here?

Who inherits the presumption of membership?

And who inherits suspicion?

These questions did not disappear with the Civil War. They were written into the amendment precisely because the nation had already answered them wrongly once. We should hesitate before answering them wrongly again. Because when belonging becomes conditional, citizenship becomes fragile. And when citizenship becomes fragile, democracy becomes negotiable.

History has already shown us the cost of answering that question wrongly.

Growing up, as a republic, means refusing to confuse mythology with memory. It means recognizing that maturity is not the absence of pride, but the presence of honesty. Nations, like people, can cling to flattering origin stories long past their usefulness. But a 250-year-old country does not need bedtime stories. It needs self-examination.

This is where I want to situate the next season of writing: in what I call critical patriotism.

Critical patriotism is not self-hatred. It is not a performative disdain for the founding generation. Nor is it the reflexive defense of every founder’s flaw as “context” beyond moral scrutiny. It is the disciplined practice of telling the truth about our origins—both the courage and the cruelty—and then asking what fidelity to the American promise requires now.

It honors the radicalism of the Declaration without pretending that its authors embodied its full implications. It acknowledges that the Constitution created durable mechanisms for self-correction while also conceding that those mechanisms were born inside a society structured by exclusion. It recognizes religious liberty as one of the republic’s great achievements—not because one faith triumphed, but because no faith was given total control.

Critical patriotism refuses hagiography, but it also refuses cynicism. It distinguishes between the American Promise and the flawed architects who first articulated it. The promise—that rights are inherent, that power must be restrained, that government derives its legitimacy from consent—is larger than any single generation. The founders gestured toward it. They did not complete it. That unfinished work is ours.

At 250, the question is not whether the founding was pure. It wasn’t. The question is whether we are willing to inherit its ideals without inheriting its illusions.

This series will explore that tension. It will examine the myths we have canonized, the contradictions we have minimized, and the principles worth preserving. Not to tear down the country—but to insist that loving a republic means wanting it to tell the truth about itself.

If we are worthy of a 250th anniversary, it will not be because we perfected the past. It will be because we were honest enough to confront it—and brave enough to extend its promise further than its founders ever did.

This is the hope of the promise. And it belongs to no party.

This isn’t leadership — it’s a dominance ritual. The whole theater runs on one rule: prove your devotion by eating the shit sandwich before anyone else does.

And let’s be honest about the Gaza reconstruction spectacle. This isn’t about the people buried under rubble. It’s about the donor class — the billion-dollar pledges, the permanent seats bought with cash, the photo-ops for elites while the actual humanitarian crisis remains unresolved. If you’re not writing a check, you’re not a participant — you’re a prop.

Working people need to wake up. Trump doesn’t see you as citizens; he sees you as an audience. The only people who matter in his world are the ones bankrolling the stage. Everyone else is just applause furniture in a very expensive show.

Don’t mistake the performance for compassion. It’s a con — and it always has been.

When Elon Musk contrasts a “common culture” with what he calls a “multicultural economic zone,” he invokes a familiar narrative: that America’s cohesion rests on a shared Anglo-American heritage now under threat.

But this idea collapses under the weight of its own history.

The English-Scots-Irish culture Musk praises did not emerge as a neutral civic inheritance. It was forged through Indigenous dispossession — land theft, forced removal, cultural erasure — and through the brutal architecture of racial slavery: human property, plantation wealth, legalized terror.

This is not incidental to America’s founding story. It is structural.

From the beginning, liberty for some depended on unfreedom for others. Any claim that American culture emerged as a clean, organic lineage is therefore historically untenable.

What is often called “common culture” was never mutual agreement. It was an enforced order. Inclusion required conformity to the dominant group’s norms, while exclusion was maintained through law, violence, and social control.

Many who later fought and died for the nation did so while denied full belonging within it.

In this sense, multiculturalism is not the disruption of American culture — it is the challenge to its original exclusions.

A genuine inheritance requires reckoning. It requires naming the dispossessed, confronting the exclusions, and acknowledging that the American project has always been unfinished.

Without that accounting, calls to “defend heritage” become something else entirely: an ideology that protects historical winners by casting them as eternal founders.

The real question is not whether America has an Anglo-American inheritance. It clearly does.

The real question is whether that inheritance was meant to remain exclusive — or whether its own constitutional ideals demand universal extension.

In other words:

Is American heritage a closed inheritance belonging to the original insiders?

Or is it an unfinished democratic promise that expands as more people claim it?

This is the question that appeals to “common culture” consistently evade.

To claim the country was "walking with Christ" during an era of state-sanctioned dehumanization requires a disingenuous erasure of history and the "egregious sins" that defined it. Ultimately, this narrative doesn't reflect a lost spiritual era; it reaches for a fictionalized "Golden Age" to avoid the uncomfortable reality that the moral past they are reaching for never actually existed.

There may have been more public religion in the past, but that certainly didn’t mean there were more Christlike virtues in public and private life.

The real Christlike virtues of the past were not found in the proponents of Christian nationalism, but in the prophetic martyrs of resistance. While nationalists were busy using faith as a veneer for White Settler Nationalism and systemic oppression, it was the dissenters—many of them deeply people of faith—who actually embodied the Gospel by challenging the state's "egregious sins."

To celebrate a "Christian" past while ignoring these martyrs is to favor a comfortable myth over the radical, sacrificial faith that actually stood against the status quo.

If your version of a 'Christian' past requires the erasure of systemic injustice to stay standing, then it isn't a spiritual heritage you're defending—it's a political cover story.

Stop confusing the loss of religious hegemony with a loss of faith. The Gospel was never found in the school board mandates of the 1950s; it was found in the streets, where the martyrs of resistance were bleeding to make the 'Christian' establishment act like Christians.

Let’s get something straight before the martyr machine spins up again.

Jake Lang is not a misunderstood protester. He is a pardoned January 6 felon who participated in some of the most brutal violence of that day—and has spent the years since turning that violence into a brand.

On January 6, Lang wasn’t waving a flag or chanting slogans. He was inside the Capitol tunnel, the epicenter of the worst physical assaults on law enforcement. He beat and shoved police officers with a bat and a stolen riot shield, helping drive a sustained, close-quarters attack that left officers crushed, injured, and gasping for air. Prosecutors described him as an active agitator pushing the mob forward in the very corridor where police came closest to being killed.

That matters. Because everything that came next depends on pretending it didn’t happen.

Instead of showing remorse, Lang spent four years in jail insisting he was the real victim. From behind bars, he reinvented himself as a “political prisoner,” monetizing his case through recorded phone calls, merchandise, fundraising appeals, and right-wing media appearances. That’s the brand he tried to export to Minneapolis.

There, Lang staged a pro-ICE, anti-Somali rally dressed up as a crusade against “fraud” and framed with Qur’an burning theatrics. The turnout? A few dozen supporters in cosplay tactical gear. The response? A massive, furious local community that rejected his provocation outright.

And when that confrontation arrived, the tough-guy patriot persona collapsed instantly.

Lang ended up cowering on a city hall window ledge—panicked, cornered—until a Black stranger, someone he demonizes through his politics, escorted him to safety through flying snowballs and bottles. The image is unavoidable: the man who glorifies state violence against immigrants couldn’t survive a moment of public accountability without help from the very people his ideology targets.

Even then, the script didn’t change.

Within hours, Lang rushed online claiming he’d been “stabbed.” Police reported no evidence. No confirmation. No record. Just another unverified story fed into the grievance pipeline so his audience could once again cast him as a persecuted hero rather than what he actually is: an extremist provocateur whose stunts backfire the moment they meet reality.

And now comes the most dangerous part.

After Donald Trump returned to power and issued sweeping pardons to January 6 offenders, Lang walked free—not chastened, not humbled, but politically upgraded. In his circles, the pardon wasn’t mercy; it was validation. Proof, they claim, that the violence was justified all along.

Lang is now running for U.S. Senate in Florida.

His platform? He openly promises to “deputize” Proud Boys and fellow January 6 rioters as bounty hunters to pursue undocumented immigrants. The same violent extremism that landed him in a D.C. jail cell is being repackaged as legitimate governance. The same fantasies of paramilitary force are now framed as policy.

This is the pipeline.

From mob violence → to martyr branding → to racist provocation → to electoral ambition.

So when you see the next round of posts insisting Jake Lang is a victim of “the system,” remember this:

He wasn’t silenced.

He wasn’t persecuted.

He wasn’t misunderstood.

He was violent.

He was unrepentant.

And he is still telling us—clearly—who he is and what he wants to do next.

The only question is whether we keep pretending not to hear him.

On the very day set aside to remember the man who forced America to look at itself without flinching, a movement now ascendant in power is asking us to forget him entirely. Or worse: to replace him. Not with another prophet of justice, but with a man who spent his career attacking the laws King died to secure—and whose followers now whisper, sometimes joke, sometimes shout, that it is his name that should be remembered instead.

This is not metaphor. It is strategy.

The assault on King’s legacy is not a stray provocation or an online stunt. It is a carefully constructed counter-tradition—one that treats white grievance as sacred truth and historical reckoning as heresy. And Charlie Kirk understood this perfectly.

Kirk’s war on MLK and civil rights

At AmericaFest in 2023, Kirk told a room packed with young conservatives that “MLK was awful,” that he was “not a good person,” and that the Civil Rights Act itself was “a huge mistake.” He framed this not as shock talk, but as sober historical correction. America, he insisted, had gone wrong the moment it tried to make racial equality enforceable.

This was not about King’s personal flaws. It was about King’s political clarity.

King named racism as a structure, not a feeling. He named poverty as violence, not personal failure. He named whiteness—not white people, but whiteness—as a lie that requires domination in order to survive. And for that, he had to be destroyed again.

Kirk even promised a coordinated MLK Day “hit job,” boasting that his staff was preparing content to “tell the truth” about King during the holiday that exists because King lived—and was killed—telling the truth about America.

From appropriation to erasure

For years, Turning Point USA tried to profit from King’s moral authority. They sold MLK merchandise. They quoted “Let freedom ring.” They wrapped themselves in a bowdlerized King who spoke only of character and never of power.

When that appropriation collapsed under scrutiny, the pivot was swift. Americans, Kirk claimed, had been fed a “fake history.” King’s “sanctified” image had to be dismantled. What followed was not nuance, but demolition.

Kirk called the Civil Rights Act an “anti-white weapon.” He blamed Black communities for gun violence. He described systemic racism as fiction. And yet, after his assassination in 2025, a familiar ritual began. His record was softened. His rhetoric laundered. He was recast as a fearless debater, a martyr to free speech, a “force of nature” taken too soon.

Movements that lack moral authority often counterfeit martyrdom.

The anti-MLK martyr

In the wake of Kirk’s death, some Christian nationalist circles attempted something obscene: to cast him as a rival saint. Rallies formed where supporters chanted “White men, fight back.” His name was invoked as a symbol of besieged white Christian manhood. Online spaces began floating the idea—sometimes as joke, sometimes as provocation—that MLK Day should be replaced with Charlie Kirk Day.

Black clergy and civil rights leaders rejected the comparison outright, calling Kirk what he was: an unapologetic racist whose words were dangerous. They insisted, correctly, that no one deserves to die for their beliefs. But they also refused the lie that his life stood in the same moral universe as King’s.

That distinction matters. It matters because the modern right demands endless grace for itself and absolute amnesia for its victims.

JD Vance and the doctrine of grievance

Into this carefully prepared ground stepped Vice President JD Vance.

At AmericaFest 2025—the first major Turning Point gathering after Kirk’s death—Vance announced that DEI had been relegated to the “dustbin of history” and assured the crowd, “In the United States, you no longer need to feel sorry for being white.” America, he claimed, now judges solely by character.

This is not reconciliation. It is absolution without confession.

There has never been an era in which white Americans were required to apologize for being white. What Vance offers instead is permission: permission to treat accountability as injury, memory as persecution, and equality as theft. It is the transformation of grievance into doctrine—the formal baptism of resentment as civic virtue.

Bernice King was right to name this lie. The language of “no more guilt” exists only to silence truth-telling. It is the vocabulary of people who believe justice is something done to them.

The moment of replacement

A nation reveals its conscience not by whom it praises, but by whom it needs to erase.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day has become intolerable to the modern American right not because King was imperfect, but because he was precise. He named racism as structure, poverty as violence, and peace as incompatible with domination. That clarity is dangerous. And so it must be buried—replaced by grievance dressed as courage, resentment crowned as faith, and a man like Charlie Kirk offered as substitute.

For years, Republicans tried to neutralize King by quoting a single line while gutting voting rights, dismantling affirmative action, and criminalizing poverty. MLK Day became a safe ritual, emptied of threat.

That pretense is over.

Kirk called King “awful.” He called the Civil Rights Act a mistake. His successors no longer bother pretending this is about honoring King’s words. It is about erasing the tradition he belonged to—and installing a new civic religion in its place.

King spent his final years condemning racism, militarism, and poverty as interlocking evils. Charlie Kirk spent his career trying to roll back the legal victories King died for. And now his heirs—from Turning Point USA to JD Vance—are attempting to turn that backlash into the governing faith of American life.

This is the choice before us in 2026.

We can remember Dr. King as he was: a threat to unjust power, an indictment of American innocence, a man who refused to confuse comfort with peace.

Or we can remember Charlie.

The country will decide which memory it can live with—and which one it must destroy in order to survive.

Loomer’s Actual Words and Context

Far-right activist Laura Loomer, a known ally of President Trump, caused outrage with a post on X (Twitter) that appeared to endorse violence against immigrants. Commenting on Florida’s new Everglades migrant detention center (nicknamed

“Alligator Alcatraz”), Loomer wrote: “Alligator lives matter. The good news is, alligators are guaranteed at least 65 million meals if we get started now.”. In plainer terms, she suggested feeding detainees to the alligators that inhabit the area. The context here is critical: this detention camp is literally surrounded by alligators, a fact President Trump himself joked about when he quipped that escapees should learn to zigzag to outrun the gators. Loomer’s comment took that cruelty a step further, implying a massive number of people could become alligator food.

Let’s be objective about what she actually said. Loomer did not explicitly mention any ethnic or racial group in that post. She didn’t say “Latinos” or “Hispanics” by name. What she did do was invoke a colossal number – 65 million – in reference to human beings as “meals” for animals. For perspective, one user immediately responded: “Who are the 65 million you are talking about? That’s approximately a fifth of the U.S. population”. Indeed, 65 million people is roughly one in every five Americans. So while Loomer’s phrasing was coy (and couched as a grotesque “joke”), the scale of her statement was anything but subtle. 65 million is not a random large number – it’s almost exactly the total Latino population in the United States. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 66 million Americans identify as Hispanic or Latino. By contrast, the estimated number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. is around 11 million, a fraction of that figure. This means Loomer’s “65 million meals” comment, whether she admits it or not, corresponds shockingly well to “every Latino currently living in the United States,” as one commentator summarized. In effect, Loomer’s “joke” fantasized about exterminating an entire marginalized community. No amount of word-twisting can hide how extreme and inflammatory that is.

Progressive Outrage: Correct Message, Missing Nuance

It didn’t take long for progressive voices and civil rights advocates to condemn Loomer’s words. Prominent commentators labeled her post “openly genocidal” and “advocating mass murder”. Many noted the unmistakable implication that she wants to wipe out Latinos or immigrants en masse. For example, former Obama aide Tommy Vietor responded by calling Loomer a “lunatic” and stating bluntly that “what this [Trump advisor] is saying is that every Latino currently living in the United States should go to prison and die.”. The outrage is clearly justified: Loomer’s rhetoric evokes the darkest of historical parallels (commenters even compared her to a “21st century Nazi” targeting Hispanics).

Occupy Democrats, a popular progressive outlet, amplified this story with urgent messaging. They highlighted Loomer’s closeness to Trump and translated her tweet’s subtext into plain English – essentially that 65 million Latinos should be rounded up and fed to alligators. Their viral posts emphasized that “there are 65 million Latinos in the U.S.” and warned that Trump’s allies are now “casually fantasizing about mass ‘unaliving’ ALL Latinos.” This framing is basically correct in capturing the outrageous meaning of Loomer’s words, and it serves to wake people up to the danger. However, it’s also intentionally incomplete: it paraphrases Loomer rather than quoting her. She never used the word “Latinos” herself – and that omission is exactly what her defenders will latch onto.

A viral Occupy Democrats graphic underscored the implications of Loomer’s comment, equating “65 million meals” with the 65 million Latinos living in the United States. This widely shared image (see above) drove home the horror of Loomer’s statement by spelling out its genocidal subtext. Yet, because it doesn’t detail Loomer’s coy phrasing, her apologists are already howling that she was misrepresented. In other words, the message is true, but its blunt delivery gives bad-faith actors a chance to quibble over wording. We need to be prepared to address that gaslighting head-on.

Anticipating the Gaslighting and Spin

Whenever such hateful rhetoric is exposed, a predictable chorus of defenders emerges to distort the reality and attack the critics. We’re already seeing it with Loomer’s post. “She never said ‘all Latinos’!” is the immediate retort – as if the lack of that exact phrasing means her hands are clean. This is classic gaslighting: attempting to make the public doubt their own eyes and ears. Let’s break down the main deflections we can expect and why they hold no water:

• “She didn’t literally say Latinos, so you’re misquoting her.” – True, Loomer’s tweet doesn’t spell out who the 65 million are. But it absolutely implies it. The number 65 million is a glaring clue. No other interpretation fits: it far exceeds any estimate of undocumented migrants, or of criminals, or any other subgroup her defenders might conjure. It matches only one demographic – the entire U.S. Latino population. Even conservative-leaning observers acknowledged this was intentional. As one commenter noted, “The entire Latino population in the U.S. is 65 million. She means all of us.”. Loomer herself effectively confirmed the target when she responded to that comment by falsely claiming, “There are 65 million ILLEGAL ALIENS in the United States. Nice try though.”. This rebuttal from her was a blatant lie (again, the real number of undocumented people is about one-sixth of that) – essentially a scramble to mask her original meaning. Pretending we are “twisting her words” is absurd when she’s the one tossing out a bogus statistic to cover her tracks. No, she didn’t say “Latinos” explicitly; she just chose the exact number that equals all Latinos and then tried to re-label that number as “illegal aliens.” We’re not falling for it, and neither should anyone else.

• “She only meant violent criminals or illegals, not an entire group.” – Nothing in Loomer’s post mentions crime or specifies any subset of immigrants. The context was a migrant detention center, and her gator analogy explicitly celebrated the prospect of 65 million human beings being devoured. If she truly meant “just the dangerous ones” or something, why use a figure tens of millions higher than even the total immigrant population? The answer: she wanted a provocatively huge number – effectively a whole people – to demonize. It’s the same ugly trick we’ve seen before: paint all immigrants or all members of a minority group as a deadly threat, then claim you only meant the “bad ones.” The scale of 65 million belies any notion of selectivity. Loomer was broadcasting a wholesale hatred, not a nuanced policy proposal.

• “It was just a joke / she’s being edgy.” – Genocidal rhetoric isn’t a joke; it’s propaganda. Calling it “edgy humor” is an insult to basic decency. Throughout history, calls for horrific violence have often been sugarcoated as “just kidding” or hyperbole – that doesn’t make them harmless. Suggesting that an entire ethnic group could become reptile feed is dehumanizing in the extreme. It reduces a population to animal fodder. Even if Loomer thought she was being clever or trolling liberals, her words have power and meaning. Dehumanization of this kind is a well-known precursor to real-world violence. As one aghast commenter told Loomer, “Not very pro-life of you…this is disturbing.”. It’s beyond disturbing – it’s the language of cruelty becoming normalized. No civilized society should shrug this off as a joke.

• “Loomer is just a fringe provocateur, who cares?” – Don’t underestimate the messenger here. Laura Loomer is not a random internet crank yelling into the void. She is a prominent MAGA figure with a significant following and direct ties to those in power. In fact, she has been described as a “close advisor and confidant” to Trump and even reportedly flew on Air Force One with him recently. News outlets confirm that Loomer has Trump’s ear – earlier in his term, he fired a high-ranking security official after Loomer urged him to purge ‘disloyal’ staff. In short, her ideas can influence policy. When someone this close to a former (and potential future) president is comfortable spewing eliminationist rhetoric, we must take it seriously. It’s not just idle shock talk on some fringe forum; it’s coming from the heart of the Trumpist movement. Dismissing it as “just Loomer being Loomer” would be dangerously naïve. She’s saying aloud what others in power may believe or eventually enact.

Rejecting the Propaganda and Standing Up for the Truth

Loomer’s “65 million meals” comment is harmful propaganda aimed at a marginalized group, and it demands a firm rebuke. By framing Latino immigrants (and effectively all Latinos) as less than human – literally as food for predators – this rhetoric seeks to strip an entire community of its humanity. We’ve seen this playbook before: extremist voices dehumanize a minority to justify cruelty, detention, and worse. Today it’s “alligators” instead of gas chambers, but the chilling echo of “ethnic cleansing” is unmistakable. As one outraged observer noted, “MAGA [is] advocating for complete racial genocide”. That is not hyperbole – that is a fair reading of what Loomer floated, even if couched as a twisted joke.

It’s urgent that we call this out for what it is. No amount of gaslighting should deter us from the facts: Yes, she meant all Latinos. No, we’re not “overreacting” by labeling that genocidal – it is genocidal by definition to fantasize about exterminating an entire ethnic population. And no, hiding behind the fig leaf of “65 million illegal aliens” fools no one; it only underscores the bad faith and bigotry at play, since one can only reach a phony number that high by counting every person of Latin American heritage as “illegal.” We refuse to let critics of these inhumane policies be silenced or sidetracked by such rhetorical tricks.

In the face of propaganda, truth and moral clarity are our best weapons. The truth is that immigrants and Latino Americans are human beings who contribute to our society, not “invaders” to be massacred. The truth is that advocating violence – even sarcastically – has consequences: it normalizes hatred and primes people to accept atrocities. And the truth is that we’ve been warned about this rhetoric before. When someone tells you (even half-jokingly) that they want to eradicate 65 million of your neighbors, believe them. As the saying goes, and the far right wants us gone. Believe them. We cannot afford to downplay or forget Loomer’s words, no matter how much her defenders try to gaslight the nation into thinking it was no big deal.

It’s heartening that so many Americans – from liberal activists to libertarians and beyond – immediately recognized Loomer’s post as beyond the pale. Public outcry and awareness are crucial. But outrage must be coupled with resolve. We must reject these dehumanizing narratives and stand in solidarity with the communities under attack. Calling out lies and bigotry is not “hysterical,” it’s responsible. So the next time someone claims “she never said ALL Latinos” as a gotcha, don’t back down. Point them to the facts, challenge the distortion, and re-focus on the real issue: a powerful figure in Trump’s inner circle flirted with genocidal rhetoric against a minority group. That is unacceptable period, and no amount of gaslighting will make it otherwise. Our collective response now isn’t just about one person’s vile tweet – it’s about making it crystal clear that America will not tolerate hate speech that threatens millions of our friends and neighbors. The lives and dignity of our fellow human beings are worth more than an “Alligator Alcatraz” punchline.

This morning, I collected and analyzed 16 unique Fox News posts from the past 24 hours tying immigrants—especially those from Venezuela, Guatemala, and El Salvador—to violent crime, gang activity, human trafficking, and repeat arrests. Not one post included statistical context or voices of dissent.

Some were straightforward reports, others were Fox-branded opinion clips. Many repeated the same image of Senator Chris Van Hollen meeting with Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a deported migrant, framing it as a scandal. Several invoked gang names like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua, and multiple posts reused mugshots or police gear imagery to reinforce threat cues.

This was not an anomaly. Fox News has a long-standing pattern of highlighting violent crimes by immigrants, especially when immigration policy is under public scrutiny [7]

The Availability Heuristic: How Repetition Shapes Fear

The “availability heuristic” is the brain’s mental shortcut for danger detection: if something comes to mind easily, it must be common—or even inevitable. Coined by psychologists Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman, the concept explains why people overestimate plane crashes, shark attacks, or child abductions: it’s not about how often these events occur, but how often we hear about them.

Now apply this to a cable news feed where immigrants are repeatedly linked to crime, violence, and moral decay. For many older Americans, Fox News isn’t just a news source—it’s background noise, ambient fear, and ideological wallpaper.

In the span of just one day, viewers saw:

• Two stories accusing Kilmar Abrego Garcia of crimes (one involving human trafficking)

• Three separate posts tying Van Hollen to “gang members”

• Multiple mentions of MS-13 and other foreign criminal groups

• At least six posts featuring mugshots, ICE imagery, or militarized police gear

This is narrative choreography, plain and simple.

It’s not just paranoia—it’s what happens when fear is piped in through the television like oxygen. The mind adapts. It starts to treat repetition as reality.

The Reality: Crime, Immigration, and Media Distortion

Multiple studies—including large-scale research in both the U.S. and abroad—show that immigration does “not increase crime rates. In fact, immigrants (including undocumented immigrants) are statistically less likely to commit violent crimes than native-born Americans.

“We document null effects of immigration on crime but positive and significant effects on crime-related concerns… triggered by disproportionate coverage of immigrant-perpetrated homicides, especially in areas with stronger media presence”.

In other words, the perception of immigrant-driven crime is shaped less by fact, and more by repetition—especially when that repetition is one-sided, selective, and emotional.

Propaganda by Omission and Emotional Framing

Fox News doesn’t need to lie outright. All it has to do is keep telling the same kind of story—and leave the rest untold. This is propaganda by omission: not what’s said, but what’s consistently left out.

Most stories about “migrant crime” follow the same script:

• Isolated, extreme acts of violence

• A mugshot or still frame from a police video

• A grieving family, framed as evidence of political failure

• A politician vowing revenge or reform

What you won’t see: crime data. Context. The fact that immigrants are less likely to commit violent crimes than native-born citizens [12]. Or interviews with immigrant families who are victims of crime, not perpetrators.

In none of the 16 posts did Fox News include:

• Crime rate comparisons between immigrants and U.S.-born citizens

• Clarifications that many featured individuals were accused but not convicted

• Any commentary from defense attorneys, immigration advocates, or even neutral legal experts

When a network filters the world through fear, every story becomes another tile in a mosaic of menace. Over time, it doesn’t just distort reality—it replaces it.

Why This Works—And What It Means

For millions of viewers—especially older adults whose televisions hum with Fox News all day—the steady drip of curated outrage doesn’t just inform. It conditions. When the same story is told twenty different ways, it ceases to feel like a story. It becomes a worldview.

This is where the availability heuristic becomes something more than a mental shortcut—it becomes the scaffolding of political identity. If the only images your mind has of immigrants involve crime scenes, mugshots, and border chaos, then “illegal immigrant” no longer describes a legal status—it evokes a threat.

And that’s the point.

Whenever I speak to viewers caught in this loop, I can predict their responses before they open their mouths. Their fears, their outrage, even their phrasing—it’s all been rehearsed for them by someone else. And yet they believe, without hesitation, that they are the only independent thinkers left in America. That’s how effective this machinery is.

So as we take a look under the hood of the FOX News propaganda machine we find:

• Repetition is not just a method—it’s a weapon.

• Omissions don’t create neutrality; they manufacture distortion.

• The most powerful propaganda is the kind that doesn’t feel like propaganda at all.

Recognizing the Effects of this model

This isn’t about journalism—it’s about engineering belief.

And when you repeat the same emotionally charged, one-sided stories every hour, you no longer need to persuade anyone. The fear becomes self-sustaining. The faces start to blur. The stories become interchangeable.

What matters is that they never stop.

Every time we mistake a repeated story for verified truth, we hand over a piece of our judgment to whoever controls the megaphone.
